Message from UW Orthodontic Department Chair Greg Huang Dear Alums, I hope each of you have seen some normalcy return to your lives and your work during this past year. While Covid is not completely over, we certainly have made some significant strides in its management. This March, we were thrilled to hold our first in-person Thesis Day since 2019. It was a fantastic way to celebrate our students’ accomplishments. Both the AAO and PCSO (WOCON) meetings were held in-person this year, and provided wonderful opportunities to see old friends and make new ones. In mid October, we were able to invite applicants to our grad program for in-person interviews. At the end of the day, the weather was warm and dry, and we had a spectacular outdoor reception on the Foege building terrace. What a pleasure it was chatting with these very talented individuals while enjoying some refreshments and a beautiful Seattle sunset. We just held our annual Halloween lunch party with everyone participating with the Minions theme (see photos), and we had our staff and faculty appreciation dinner in early December. The personal interactions that arise from all these activities play a big role in the routine and rhythm of our professional lives, and keep us all connected. Along those lines, a very noteworthy event is planned for August, 2023 – our Department’s 75th Anniversary Reunion meeting, which will be held in Suncadia. Our UWOAA President, Peter Shapiro, devotes his message to this event, so my only comment is to please come and re-connect with your classmates next August! My message returns to Thesis Day, which many of you know was supported this year by the David and Judith Turpin Endowment. Dave and Judy made a significant donation of $250K , which took us halfway to the Fund’s target of $500K. Additional donations have already increased the fund to almost $300K. This endowment, when fully funded, will cover all the expenses of Thesis Day and the Alton Moore Lecturer, without having to charge any registration fees to students, spouses, parents, faculty, staff, or alums. No event is more important to our Department, and I feel strongly that we should try to attain our goal for this fund as soon as possible. After discussions with Dave and Judy, I have decided to also make a significant donation to this fund, and Dave and Judy have agreed to re-name it the David Turpin and Greg Huang Endowed Program Support Fund. (I cannot tell you how honored I am to share this fund’s name with David, and Judy says her loyalty has always been with Iowa, anyway!). My plan is to donate a total of $100K to the fund. The rate at which I donate those funds will depend on the assistance I receive from all of you. I will match all your donations, up to $50K each year, until we get this done. So please, double your impact by donating to this fund before the end of the year in 2022, and continue donating next year. I will match your donations dollar for dollar! With your support, I hope we can reach our goal soon. As the end of the year approaches, I wish each of you a joyous and peaceful Holiday Season. Despite all the challenges in the world, we are truly fortunate to enjoy rewarding careers as orthodontists! ![]() Sincerely, ![]() Greg J. Huang, DMD, MSD, MPH Professor and Chair Message from UWOAA Board President Peter Shapiro Dear Alums,The focus of our activities over the last 6 – 9 months has been the reunion meeting next August – the 75th year of our department! Suncadia is a great venue: beautiful scenery, a plethora of available activities, and great spaces for a meeting. We have planned an excellent scientific program of alumni speakers. The social events will be fun and casual with lots of time for catching up with friends. I am personally excited at the thought of seeing so many of you again. Please register as soon as possible, as there will be limited rooms available at the Lodge. It is time to pay your 2023 dues to the Alumni Association. Donations to specific funds support the activities of those funds, and they are all certainly worthy of your support. Dues are used for accounting, website maintenance and improvement, and administration. Any excess funds are used for support of graduate student research and other faculty and graduate student activities. The UW continues to be one of the strongest orthodontic programs in the world. Strong membership is indicative of the pride we have in it. I would like to think we could meet a goal of at least 80% membership. So please click on the appropriate button and pay your dues. Thank you all for your great support of our department. I hope to see many of you at Thesis Day and even more of you at the reunion meeting. ![]() Sincerely, ![]() |

In addition to the development of expertise in manipulation of orthodontic materials, these exercises have had the benefit of stimulating the creative imagination. Two of our alumni, George Newton and Don Gardner, took things to a whole new level when, following retirement from private practice, each of them capitalized on his creative talents to become well-recognized sculptors. Here is a glimpse at George’s and Don’s “second-career” artistic endeavors. Dr. George Newton, after completing our UW orthodontic residency in 1965, returned to Hawaii where he had previously served in the military. There he established his practice in Kailua on Oahu’s north shore. Not entirely satisfied with confining himself to orthodontics, George began designing and producing jewelry that he very successfully marketed through retailers in Hawaii and on the mainland. In the early ‘90s he decided to pursue a career in art on a full-time basis, retired from orthodontic practice, and enrolled in the Master of Fine Arts graduate program at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa where he focused on sculpture. George’s studio sculptures are largely abstract even though the inspiration was often drawn from his deep appreciation of the natural world. Notable among these is a series of stabiles modeled on ocean waves that simultaneously reflect George’s sense of order and are evocative of the ceaseless, repetitive motion of the sea that surrounds his home island. Examples of these works can be seen on the website of the Honolulu gallery that has, for many years, represented Dr. Newton: https://cedarstreetgalleries.com/bin/works.cgi?Artist=NewtonGeorge Then there are the large-scale sculptures of which the most noteworthy is “Bending the Circle” which in 2010 George gifted to his undergraduate alma mater, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Even though this work is static, the sinuous, complex curves of the tubular aluminum shapes and the irregular overlapping spaces they enclose give a sense of constant motion. This remarkable sculpture, which is 10 feet tall, 7 feet deep and 15 feet wide, can be fully appreciated only when studied from various aspects since from each viewpoint it assumes a completely different configuration. Our colleague, Dr. Newton, passed away in 2017 but his spirit lives on in his exceptional works of art. Dr. Don Gardner, UW Class of 1979, preceded his orthodontic career with an MSD in Dental Materials and Pediatric Dentistry from Indiana University, faculty positions at The Medical School of Georgia (Chair of Pedodontics) and University of Colorado, and private pediatric dentistry practice in Littleton, CO. A growing interest in orthodontics led Don to the University of Washington for his residency. After two years in Seattle, Don, along with his wife Julie and their two daughters, returned to Littleton where he practiced orthodontics for nineteen years. An old back injury and chronic pain following multiple surgeries then dictated Don’s early retirement from clinical practice. While hospitalized after one of those surgeries, Don was visited by a former patient, Steve LeBlanc—an accomplished sculptor, who brought with him some dental instruments and a supply of wax and challenged Don to do some carving while he was in recovery. Thus began Don’s development as a sculptor in his own right. Steve became somewhat of a mentor as did several of Don’s dental colleagues with whom Don collaborated in establishing a successful gallery through which they marketed their art. Don’s artistic focus has been on figurative bronze castings of life-forms employing the same “lost wax” technique we all mastered in our dental training but on a much-magnified scale. The result is remarkably realistic sculptures, some approaching life-size, of birds and other animals as well as human figures. When questioned about the skills he mastered and the knowledge accrued during his years of sculpting, Don responded that, “Working with wax and clay came easy for me.” And with more than a modicum of humility he claimed, “Any dentist can do it!” Really???
