Message from UWOAA President Peter Shapiro ![]() It’s hard to remember a time when the Dental School wasn’t in a difficult financial situation and, of course, this year will be no different. However, partially with the support of our alumni Endowed Funds, the Orthodontic department continues to thrive. However, none of our Endowed Funds are fully funded. For example, the Moore-Riedel Endowed Chair only supports part of a professorship salary, and the Turpin-Huang Fund needs about $100,000 in additional donations (plus Greg’s $100,000 match) to fully fund Thesis Day. So additional contributions to our six existing Funds would be a great thing. As I’ve mentioned in prior newsletters, we are grateful to our dues-paying alumni. Dues pay for the sponsorship of receptions at AAO and PCSO meetings, the residents taking the ABO exam, and periodic one-time needs of the department. Most importantly, the Alumni Association directly supports graduate student-research projects. We are very excited about the reunion meeting, which you all know about and will be held at Suncadia Resort August 18-20. We have an excellent scientific program by distinguished alumni and a great social program. So far over 140 alumni and guests have registered, representing almost every class. Currently we are negotiating with Suncadia for larger meeting rooms. If you’re thinking of attending, please register as soon as possible. Although rooms in our block are sold out, you still have options to book rooms in the Suncadia Lodge, as well as nearby condos, rental homes and other hotels. The Alumni Board changes every three years in September. My term as President ends in September, but I will stay on the Board for three more years as past President. Charlie Hall will rotate off the Board after many, many years of great service. Thank you, Charlie! Sam Finkleman was elected to serve as our Board President. Jennifer Mirabelli was re-elected to the Board and was also elected as Secretary-Treasurer. We thanked Soleil Roberts for her six years as a Board member, and as a reward she was elected to another six-year term. Mike Fey and Keyvan Sohrabi remain on the Board for another three years, and we are pleased to welcome one new Board member, Gabriela Aragon. Gabi completed the program in 2021, so she will provide valuable insights as a recent grad. The Board meets six times/year (the last few years by Zoom) and welcome comments from the membership about anything. We have a wonderful department and a great group of alumni. Thank you very much for your support. I look forward to seeing many of you in August. ![]() Peter Shapiro (’73) UWOAA President [email protected] Quick Reminder: Dues for the association are due annually on January 1st. If you haven’t paid your 2023 dues please visit the UWOAA.org website and make your online payment today. We really appreciate the support of all our alumni. NOTE: If you paid your dues last year online and didn’t deselect the “Make this donation yearly” tab then your payment will be made automatically if your credit card information hasn’t changed.Dear Alums, |
Message from UW Department Chair Greg Huang ![]() I would like to begin my newsletter with a big thank you to Peter Shapiro, who will be completing his 3-year term as President of the UWOAA this fall. Peter has been a wonderful leader for the UWOAA. Of course, who better to lead the organization than Peter, who has a 52-year history with our Department. He enrolled in our graduate program in 1971, and although he graduated in 1973, in a sense, he has never left our program. Upon graduation, he immediately became a faculty member, and in 1984, became our Department’s 4th Chair. He actively taught for almost 40 years, and he was honored with the title of Clinical Professor Emeritus in 2009. Peter and Vince established the Kokich-Shapiro Endowed Lectureship in 1991, a lecture series that has enriched our students’ education immeasurably. All the greats have been Kokich-Shapiro Lecturers, including Proffit, Johnston, Burstone, McNamara, Nanda, Roth, Sarver, and others. And most recently, of course, Peter has been leading the UWOAA with his good humor, great ideas, attention to detail, and uncommon common sense, all in the spirit of supporting UW Orthodontics. I don’t think you need any more reminders about the 75th reunion at Suncadia, but you should know that Peter is the one who led the efforts to make it happen. Thank you, Peter! I know each and every alum thanks you, too, for all you have done and continue to do for the UW Department of Orthodontics and the UWOAA! I would like to mention a couple of other items. First, Thesis Day and the Alton Moore Lecture, given by Dr. Peter Ngan, were wonderful. Second, please consider donating to the Turpin-Huang Fund, and remember, I am matching all contributions up to a total of 100K. Third, Dr. André Ritter was named Dean of the School of Dentistry last fall. Previously, he was at UNC and NYU. We have gone through quite a few Interim Deans and Deans over the past 5 years, but I am very pleased that Dean Ritter brings an enthusiastic, progressive, and hands-on approach to his new job. Although he has many challenges, I am optimistic that he can navigate these issues and lead the school to educational and scholarly excellence, as well as fiscal stability. Finally, late last year, Dean Ritter asked if I would serve as Chair of the Department for another 5-year term. (Believe it or not, I am finishing my 15th year as Chair, and I had only planned to hold the position for 10 years.) After seeking advice from family, faculty, and friends, and then thinking carefully about the Department’s needs during the next 5 years, I decided to accept Dean Ritter’s invitation to serve as chair another 5 years. It is a critical time for our profession, as well as for our Department. Technology, technology companies, and key opinion leaders seem to have more and more impact and influence on our profession. We need good research and evidence to keep our profession grounded in science, and our Department needs to participate in this effort. Another challenge is the severe shortage of orthodontic educators and researchers, which makes it difficult for all US programs to fill faculty openings. We will need to recruit several young, promising individuals in order to carefully craft a succession plan that will keep UW Orthodontics at the forefront of education and research. These will be two primary goals during my last term as Chair, after which I fully intend to turn the departmental keys over to our next Chair. In closing, I would just like to thank each of the alums for the support you have given to the Department and to me. It is truly appreciated! With best wishes, Greg ![]() Greg J.
