UWOAA Wire – Spring 2022

Message from UWOAA President Peter Shapiro   Thesis Day was a wonderful, in-person event.  We held it at the UW Urban Horticulture Center, which is adjacent to campus.  As usual, the graduating students made excellent presentations.  We had good discussions, led by Mike Hairfield’s always provocative questions and comments.  Mike joined us on Zoom, as did many other people.  Our ability to host in person and Zoom events will enable us to include alumni for many events in the future.  Following the program, we adjourned to the Atrium for a lovely reception.  This year there were no registration fees for Thesis Day because the graduation event was supported by the newly established David and Judith Turpin Endowed Program Support Fund in Orthodontics.  We are so grateful to Dave and Judy for their extraordinary gift to the Department.  Their endowment will pay for much of our annual graduation event – Thesis Day and the Alton Moore Lectureship.  With some additional contributions to this fund by alumni, in a few years we should be able to achieve our goal of fully funding the graduation event.  It is our main fundraising priority for this year.  However, it is also a good opportunity to mention our other funds, which deserve your support.

The Chair’s Fund for Excellence in Orthodontics:  This gives the Chair funds for priority needs that are not provided by the School of Dentistry.  The Moore – Riedel Chair in Orthodontics: this provides salary support for this senior academic position, which is currently held by Don Joondeph.  The Kokich – Shapiro Endowed Fund for Excellence in Orthodontics:  this fund supports the visits by outstanding scholars and also supports the Kokich – Shapiro endowed professorship, which is currently held by Greg Huang.  Partial support of these senior academic positions frees up money to recruit younger academicians, who are important for our longterm success.  And last, but not certainly the least are our dues.  Our dues pay for our organizational expenses (which are very modest), the sponsorship of receptions at AAO and PCSO meetings, support of the residents for various meetings and the taking of the ABO exam, and periodic one-time needs of the Department.  Most importantly, however, UWOAA supports most graduate student research!  I hope you will pay your dues this year.

In this newsletter you will see a terrific article written by Bill McNeill about Jean-Pierre Joho.  He graduated from our program in 1971 and went on to chair the Department of Orthodontics in Geneva.  In the last departmental newsletter, Bill McNeill wrote another great article about our alumnus Gordy Newton.  Also you will remember the great photographs sent by Mardon Lamb’s family (class of ’61).  I would really encourage others of you to submit articles/photographs of interest about you or your classmates to [email protected].  We will add them to our newsletter and/or the History section of our website.  It will help us preserve the history and legacy of our Department.

Lastly, I want to highlight our reunion meeting August 18-20, 2023.  It will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the founding of our Department.  It will be held at Suncadia Resort in Cle Elum, WA, which is a great setting for a family-oriented meeting/vacation.  We will have an excellent scientific program, highlighting alumni, and lots of opportunities for relaxed social interaction.  Details of the meeting will be forthcoming soon.  When the time comes, please register for a room in our block, as we guaranteed a certain number of rooms to take advantage of the meeting facilities of the Resort.  I think it is going to be well attended and encourage you to sign up as soon as registration opens.

Thank you, everyone, for your support of the Department this past year.  We look forward to next year’s Thesis Day / Alton Moore Lectureship in March and then the 75th reunion in August.

Quick Reminder: Dues for the association are due annually on January 1st.  If you haven’t paid your 2022 dues please visit the UWOAA.org website and make your online payment today.  We really appreciate the support of all our alumni.  NOTE: If you paid your dues last year online and didn’t deselect the “Make this donation yearly” tab then your payment will be made automatically if your credit card information hasn’t changed.Dear Alums,
Message from UW Department Chair Greg Huang   Dear Alums,
Happy Spring to everyone!  I hope this newsletter finds each of you in good health and enjoying the warmer weather and longer days.  It seems 2022 is the year that we are going to return to in-person professional meetings.  We just held our first in-person Thesis Day since 2019, and the AAO will hold their first in-person annual session in three years.  After this long Covid hiatus, I think we are all ready to attend meetings and catch up with old friends.

Professional meetings give us real “face time” with each other, and when orthodontists get face time, you know what happens, right?  There is this wonderful synergy of ideas and experiences and questions. And if we are lucky, even a few answers to the latest, greatest things that are happening in our profession.

With that thought in mind, I hope that each of you will mark our 75th anniversary reunion in your calendars right now – August 18-20, 2023.  Not only will you get to see many of your classmates and fellow alums, but the UWOAA board has been working very hard to bring you 3 days of inspirational and educational CDE, all given by our esteemed UW alums.  Some of the  planned lectures include the history of our Department, the future of orthodontics and orthodontic education, 3D printing, TAD-borne expansion, practice management, craniofacial development, and aligner therapy.

The setting will be the beautiful Suncadia Resort, about 80 miles east of Seattle.  Some of the activities you can enjoy include golf, tennis, pickleball, swimming, boating, fishing, hiking, and biking.  Depending on interest, we hope to have a golf tournament and a pickleball tournament, so practice your putting and your dink shots.  I know August, 2023 might sound like a long time from now, but it will be here before you know it.  So plan now on coming to  Seattle in the summer of 2023.

Everything in the Department is going well, so my only message for this newsletter is:
Please come to the reunion in August, 2023!

Best,GregThank you!

“32 Years of Functional Jaw Orthopedics”
_______________________________

Friday, March 17,  2023

 Dr. Peter Ngan
Professor and Chair, Department of Orthodontics,
WVU School of Dentistry

Are functional appliances able to increase mandibular length in Class II patients?  Are protraction facemask able to produce orthopedic effects in Class III patients? What about their effects in the long term? What are the factors that influence the outcomes of functional jaw orthopedics and who are the best candidates for this type of treatment? The speaker will address these key questions pertaining to functional jaw orthopedics and illustrate with clinical cases.  Registration costs are lower for UW Ortho alumni if dues are paid.

For my wire sculpture I wanted to create something that is both esthetically pleasing and functional, like the arch wires we bend for our patients. The pour-over coffee maker made with soldered ortho wires was inspired by one of my favorite things – drinking freshly brewed coffee in the morning while camping in the wilderness. The wire coffee brewer is extremely lightweight, and, with a detachable filter holder, is a beautiful way to make pour-over coffee both on your kitchen countertop and by the campfire.
Delicate Arch by Dr. Deepa Gollamudi

“After spending the past few years in Utah, my hiking adventures with friends and family were the most memorable! My wire sculpture was inspired by the Delicate Arch in Arches National Park.”

Headgear by Dr. Kelly McMonagle

“An interpretive cephalogram tracing made entirely from pieces of headgear.”Karavaki by Dr. Eleftheria Iris Michelaki
“This project is inspired from an old Greek tradition which still thrives today. “Karavaki,” meaning a small boat, represents a powerful symbol of moving toward a new life. Before the Christmas tree decoration, the tradition was to decorate boats with lights. Even if a family did not own a boat, they would use small model boats to decorate. Children would carry the model boats around along with musical instruments as they sang the Christmas carols to their neighbors.”
Dad and I by Dr. Kha Nguyen
“My parents have always been involved in every step of my journey. It would only be right if I got my dad involved in this project so he can understand a bit more about what I’m doing and enjoying every day. I sketched the birds and he learned to bend the orthodontic wires. My dad bent one of the hummingbirds. The one he bent said so much about his personality and how he is to me: humble, encouraging, supportive and inspiring. Can you guess which one he made?”Dean’s Club Honorary Lifetime Member AwardA big congratulations to Dr. David Turpin who was awarded the Dean’s Club Honorary Lifetime Member Award.  The event was held May 7th, 2022 at the Bell Harbor Conference Center.    Jean-Pierre Joho ’71

Jean-Pierre Joho, UW class of 1971, was for many years a familiar figure on the international orthodontic lecture circuit. In his position as Professor and Chairman of the combined Orthodontic and Pedodontic Department, University Dental School in Geneva, Switzerland from 1974 to 1997, Jean-Pierre had a major influence on European orthodontics through his training of a generation of residents and his involvement in orthodontic organizations on the continent. After his retirement from orthodontics, Jean-Pierre’s organizational skills and energy turned toward the establishment of a museum to house the vast array of antique tradesman tools and implements he had acquired over decades of collecting. Here is the story of Jean-Pierre’s Musée des Outils Anciens de Pinsec (MOAP). It was 1974. Jean-Pierre and Claudine and their young children were moving in to a small Geneva townhouse, the narrow entry stairway of which had walls so rough that visitors repeatedly snagged their sweaters. The solution? Jean-Pierre bought two old sickles and mounted them on the walls. In addition to their utility as warnings about the rough walls, Claudine liked the sickles as decoration so Jean-Pierre began acquiring a variety of antique tools—most from Switzerland but others from Great Britain and the United States. Over a twenty-year period, on his Wednesday and Saturday lunch-hours, Jean-Pierre searched the local flea market for interesting pieces. His collection grew as he connected with antique tool dealers and participated in auctions. And his knowledge, expertise, and enthusiasm for collecting old tools flourished as he studied the books he acquired to stock his library of over sixty specialty volumes. When later the Johos moved to their present home in the leafy Geneva suburb of Vandoeuvres, Jean-Pierre filled the basement with rows of shelves to house his tool collection; a collection that eventually numbered over two-thousand specimens. As the years advanced, Jean-Pierre became uncertain as to  the eventual disposition of his collection. Then in 2016 occurred a fortuitous event. Jean-Pierre was watching a television interview of the society president, André Abbé (known locally as Déde), of Pinsec, a small mountain village in Switzerland’s Valais region. At the end of the interview Déde said, “My dream is to have a museum of old tools of the professions in our thirty-kilometer long valley. But nobody wants to lend me his tools!” Jean-Pierre immediately connected with Dédé and offered to donate his collection. Thus began the close collaboration that resulted in establishment of MOAP. Pinsec’s village society made available for the museum a typical Swiss grain barn that was built in 1733, the date confirmed by dendrochronological analysis of a section of one of the barn’s larch beams. Not only did Jean-Pierre personally work out a plan for structural renovations and interior arrangement of the anticipated museum displays by building a miniature model at the scale of 1:100, he also tapped in to the generosity of his former students and orthodontic department staff members thus raising 30,000 Swiss francs (US$ 32,000) to finance the project.Jean-Pierre bought display-case materials, including non-reflective glass, and with the help of his friend Renato, fabricated the cases in his home wood-shop. He selected the approximately one-thousand tools to be displayed and did the layout and photography for both the museum exhibits and for a beautifully compiled guide (in German, French, and English) illustrating the tools used by each of twenty-three tradesman categories from blacksmith to cheesemaker to saddle maker to vintner. The final step was the on-site display case installation at the Pinsec grain barn. For this task Jean-Pierre recruited friends, orthodontic colleagues, and family members. With everything in place MOAP was ready, in July 2020, for its grand opening—hosted by the grateful citizens of Pinsec. It was a celebratory weekend, capping several years of intense effort by Jean-Pierre and the many people with whom he collaborated on this fascinating venture. Now……What to do with the remaining one-thousand tools on those basement shelves? Some one-hundred very special items, such as an anvil of 1794, two 17th century carpenter’s compasses, and a Swiss broad-axe of 1684, will stay in the family in particular because of the interest  in the collection of two of Jean-Pierre’s and Claudine’s grandchildren. The remaining tools will go to Portugal where Renato has plans to open a museum dedicated to agricultural heritage.
Further information about MOAP is available at:https://www.moap.ch/en/ and https://www.moap.ch/en/about-us/ .
